Structural Deterioration of Existing Structures and Practitioners’ Professional Obligations

This article, written by Synergy’s Sally Thompson, discusses structural deterioration of existing buildings and a professional engineer’s obligations when they encounter structurally significant deterioration. Engineers in Ontario can’t simply write a report about concerns that might be a public safety risk; they have a duty to ensure that the safety risk is addressed.  This creates difficult obligations for the engineers, particularly when their duty runs counter to their client’s wishes.
